My Other CineVegas Favorite- Vegas:Based on a True Story
The story is simple. A working-class family living on the outskirts of Vegas comes in contact with a young man who used to live in their house, and who tells them that a famous haul from a casino heist-- believed to be lost for decades-- may be buried in their backyard.Dad (Mark Greenfield) and son (Zach Thomas) are eager to give it a shot, but Mom (Nancy La Scala) has always tended carefully to the yard as a fairly clear symbol of her upward mobility, and isn't eager to start digging holes. But the temptations of easy money eventually work their powers on her as well, and before too long the carefully tended grass has turned into a series of dusty ditches, none of them turning up the promised treasure. Director Amir Naderi's flair for depicting addiction, and his uncanny ability to weave that addiction through very specific topographies, amount to a highly poetic tragedy.Amir Naderi started his international career in Iran in the 1970s with award-winning films such as Waiting and Requiem. In the 80s, he helped focus international attention on Iranian cinema with acclaimed works such as The Runner and Water, Wind, Dust. Based in New York City since the late ‘80s, Naderi has since made his New York Trilogy: Manhattan by Numbers (1993), A, B, C… Manhattan (1997), and Marathon (2002). Vegas : Based on a True Story (2008) is his fifth American feature.
CineVegas hosts Jon Voight tribute
This year’s CineVegas tribute to Jon Voight included the film "Lookin To Get Out" and was probably the best film (imho) screened at CineVegas- Of course I am biased as I love all films that were shot in Las Vegas, especially before 1990. The film was made in 1982 but seemed to transcend time, a story of two addicted gamblers in debt, running from the henchmen -hop a plane to Vegas to try to recoup their loses is one that if it had been released in 1982 would have been remade into a current version today. The audience laughed at the jokes, were moved by the dramatic moments; the entire experience was just amazing. In 1981, Jon Voight signed on to star in the comedy which he’d co-written.
Co-starring would be Burt Young of Rocky fame, and the stunning Ann-Margret, with a brief appearance by Angelina Jolie who plays Voights daughter.
Directing would be Hal Ashby, a maverick who’d made such hit flicks as Harold and Maude (1971), Shampoo (1975) and Being There (1979), and who would die of cancer 1988, never to see the final cut. The DVD will be released in August and I would highly recommend seeing it.

CineVegas Trailer of the week- Modus Operandi
The craziest film screened at Cinevegas this year had to be Modus Operandi.
Shot on Super 8 and in the vein of a Tarantino,Blacksploitation, retro, spy thriller- this film will leave you confused as to what the heck is going on, until the end when it all seems to come together. “Modus Operandi” (USA, 2009) World Premiere
Director: Frankie Latina
Cast: Randy Russell, Mark Borchardt, Michael Sottile, Danny Trejo, Barry Poltermann, Sarah Price, Xavier Leplae, Ayesha Mohan
“Modus Operandi” is a revenge tale about a desperate CIA agent on a mission to find the man who murdered his wife.

Top Chef shoots in Las Vegas
After five and a half weeks in Sin City, the sixth season of Top Chef finished filming over last weekend. As previously suspected, the M Resort was the host site, but most filming took place in an off-site replica version of the M Restaurant—just like in Ocean's 11, see?—and the show premieres in September. So now that filming is over, if you industry folks notice any chefs suspiciously returning to the kitchen today after a five-week vacation, do tell...
First Food and Bar @ The Palazzo
First Food and Bar @ The Palazzo
It's "the" neighborhood bar. The one with the burgers and fries that taste like heaven at 2 a.m. The joint with the great playlist and your favorite beer on tap. The one that's a little bit rock 'n roll, but didn't scare away your folks when they stopped in for a visit last month. It's a late-night institution that makes you want to stay up just a little bit later. It's "that" bar…and that bar is FIRST.
Set to open in early summer 2009 inside The Shoppes at The Palazzo, FIRST Food & Bar brings the authenticity and character of the neighborhood bar and diner concept back to life, minus the kitsch. This hip, yet comfortable restaurant and lounge is set in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip and has the vibe of a late-night spot blended with the casualness of a local eatery. FIRST caters to those who stagger in to feed their late-night cravings, as well as those looking for an early breakfast or mid-day business lunch.

Kelly Monaco and Mel B leaving "Peep Show"
"Peepshow" will have two new leads by the end of this month -- former Spice Girl Mel B is leaving too.
She declined an extension and will end her contract June 22. Kelly Monaco made it official last month.
Scott Zeiger; Co-CEO of BASE Entertainment, confirmed the departure of Mel B and refuted British newspaper reports that she was furious that her contract wasn't extended.
"It has always been our plan to feature rotating celebrities in 'Peepshow' to keep the spirit of the show fresh and new," Zeiger said in an e-mail.
"That said, we love Mel and she is terrific in the role as 'Peep Diva.' We discussed with Mel the possibility of an extension and perhaps she will return to the show some day, however, we simply could not make the show and Mel’s schedules align at this time.”Who will follow has yet to be announced- I vote for Megan Fox.
